OSSERVATORIO ASTRONOMICO DELLA REGIONE AUTONOMA VALLE D'AOSTA:

PROGRAMMA DELLE ATTIVITÀ

DI RICERCA PER IL 2012

In OAVdA sono attivi quattro progetti di ricerca istituzionali che si svolgono durante tutto l’anno e spaziano dallo studio del Sistema Solare all’indagine sulle stelle della Via Lattea e l’osservazione delle galassie lontane. Inoltre l’OAVdA partecipa, su esplicite richieste di altri istituti in Italia e all’estero, anche a collaborazioni internazionali per specifiche campagne di studio, che si svolgono in periodi ben determinati di tempo a seconda del fenomeno celeste da osservare e analizzare.
Finora sono state prodotte quasi 40 pubblicazioni scientifiche con peer review, comparse negli atti di importanti congressi internazionali e su riviste specializzate di riferimento a livello mondiale come Astronomy & Astrophysics, The Astrophysical Journal, Icarus, Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, The Astronomical Journal. I ricercatori in OAVdA, molti dei quali hanno goduto o tuttora godono di borse di ricerca FSE erogate dalla Regione Autonoma Valle d’Aosta, dall’inizio del 2012 sono associati INAF: un ulteriore riconoscimento del valore delle ricerche svolte a Saint-Barthélemy.

I PROGETTI ISTITUZIONALI
Nel seguito sono brevemente descritti i quattro progetti di ricerca istituzionali dell’OAVdA, tutti in collaborazione con l’INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico di Torino (INAF-OATo).

1. Il Progetto Corona solare (responsabile Paolo Calcidese) contempla il lavoro di calibrazione di un innovativo strumento con filtro a cristalli liquidi per studiare lo stato di polarizzazione della luce prodotta dalla fotosfera e diffusa dagli elettroni liberi nella corona solare. Si tratta del prototipo per i polarimetri che nei prossimi anni voleranno a bordo di missioni spaziali della European Space Agency (ESA). L’équipe congiunta di INAF-OATo e OAVdA si è recata nel 2006 nel deserto del Sahara al confine tra Libia e Chad, e nel 2010 su un atollo della Polinesia francese nell’Oceano Pacifico, per l’osservazione della corona solare durante un’eclisse totale di Sole.

2. Il Progetto Asteroidi (responsabile Albino Carbognani) è stato avviato prima in collaborazione con INAF-OATo e il Minor Planet Center Minor dell’Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (USA) a Cambridge, Stati Uniti, poi anche con l’agenzia aerospaziale tedesca DLR a Berlino, Germania e l’Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur di Nizza, Francia. Riguarda l’osservazione fotometrica con relativa interpretazione fisica e analisi teorica comparativa di proprietà e caratteristiche di diverse popolazioni, dagli asteroidi della Fascia Principale ai Troiani di Giove; inoltre osservazioni astrometriche e fotometriche di asteroidi e comete di tipo Near Earth Object (NEO), potenzialmente a rischio di impatto con la Terra.

3. Il Progetto Nuclei galattici attivi (responsabile Paolo Calcidese) prevede la misura dell’emissione luminosa dalle regioni centrali di galassie lontane miliardi di anni luce nell’ambito di un consorzio internazionale chiamato Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT), gestito da INAF-OATo e comprendente oltre 40 centri in tutto il mondo.

4. Il Progetto Pianeti extrasolari (responsabili Andrea Bernagozzi, Paolo Calcidese, Albino Carbognani, Jean-Marc Christille, Davide Cenadelli, Mario Damasso) ha l’obiettivo di cercare pianeti di tipo terrestre in orbita attorno alle stelle nane M con il metodo fotometrico del transito. Sviluppato fin dalle fasi iniziali da un gruppo congiunto di lavoro tra OAVdA e INAF-OATo, tra i progetti attivi è quello cui attualmente sono dedicate le maggiori risorse in termini di staff, tempo, fondi. Richiede l’installazione a Saint-Barthélemy di una schiera di cinque telescopi da 400 mm per osservare, nell’arco di cinque anni, un campione di circa 3000 stelle nane M.

Nel 2012 il lavoro di ricerca sarà concentrato sul Progetto Pianeti extrasolari, dal 2008 il progetto principale dell’OAVdA, e sul Progetto Asteroidi. Il Progetto Corona solare è per sua natura intermittente, perché strettamente legato alle osservazioni di eclissi totali di Sole che presentino certe condizioni: nel 2012 non sono previste attività particolari al riguardo. Il Progetto Nuclei galattici attivi è stato invece temporaneamente sospeso a causa dell’importante impegno in termini di personale, conoscenza e tempo.

PROGETTI DI RICERCA IN COMUNICAZIONE DELLA SCIENZA

Nel 2011 sono stati avviati due progetti in un ambito nuovo per la ricerca scientifica svolta in Fondazione: la comunicazione della scienza.

1. Il Progetto New media (responsabile Matteo Soldi) mira ad utilizzare alcuni strumenti del Web partecipativo (per esempio blog e social network) per promuovere la ricerca scientifica, comunicando gli sviluppi e i risultati dei progetti di ricerca scientifica in astronomia e in astrofisica attivati in OAVdA, a partire dal progetto di ricerca sui Pianeti extrasolari. Ne è responsabile Matteo Soldi, studente del Master in Comunicazione della Scienza alla Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA) di Trieste e assegnatario di una borsa di ricerca FSE.

2. Il Progetto Public Understanding of Astronomy-PUA (responsabile Paolo Pellissier) promosso e coordinato dall’Institut för Avancerade Studier Strömstad Akademi in Svezia, è un progetto multidisciplinare che intende valutare la conoscenza pregressa in astronomia dei visitatori dei planetari in vari paesi del mondo, dalle Americhe al Giappone, mediante test a scelta multipla. Partecipa al progetto per conto della Fondazione Clément Fillietroz-ONLUS Paolo Pellissier, responsabile del Planetario di Lignan, che costituisce il riferimento italiano del PUA.
Entrambi i progetti continueranno nel 2012 con modalità analoghe a quelle dell’anno precedente.

Nota esplicativa

Parallelamente allo sviluppo dell'attività di ricerca, i fisici dell'OAVdA sono stati inseriti nelle attività proposte a studenti e insegnanti. Un fattore che si è rivelato decisivo per il successo delle iniziative, perché ha messo sotto l'occhio di tutti in maniera concreta il legame inscindibile che esiste tra la ricerca scientifica e la didattica. Questa impostazione ha contribuito a elevare notevolmente la qualità dell'offerta per le scuole, al punto che alcuni laboratori didattici ispirati ai progetti di ricerca attivati in OAVdA sono stati oggetto di presentazioni orali a congressi scientifici e pubblicazioni su riviste internazionali con peer review. Per questo motivo è pertinente citarli in questa sede.
